Your hair is one of the first things people notice about you and is a great extension of yourself. Hair, and appearance more generally, create our first impressions, therefore whether your hair is straight, curly, or kinky here is a guide to treating your hair for its health and manageability.
1. Deep Conditioner Masks
With all the styling and braiding you do to your hair, it’s important to add deep conditioning treatment to be part of your regular hair care routine. There are many repairing benefits of deep conditioning treatments. It helps support health, hydration, strength and overall appearance. This treatment provides much-needed nourishment for dry and damaged hair by softening and strengthening it. Deep conditioning treatments work best on freshly shampooed hair, especially when they’re packed with essential oils and free of alcohol and silicone.
2. Leave-In Conditioners
If your hair isn’t cooperating lately, there’s a good chance it just really wants a quality leave-in conditioner. Leave-In conditioners provide moisture by replacing the vital oils in your hair that are lost during the shampooing process. These products also make detangling easier and help tame frizzy hair. They moisturize dry hair and make it softer, smoother, and shinier.
3. Nourishing Hair Oils
Sometimes, your go-to hair mask just isn’t enough, enter hair oils. When oil is massaged into the scalp, it permeates deep inside so that it can enter the hair cuticle and nourish the strand from root to tip as well and stimulate the blood flow. When using essential oils, never apply them directly to the scalp or hair. They do not dilute in water and must be used with a carrier oil. Always test a small drop of oil on your skin to be sure you do not experience an adverse reaction, and be sure not to ingest them. You can add a few drops in your shampoo or conditioner as a base to soothe your scalp to get all the benefits you need.
4. Styling Hair Serums
You’re shampooing and conditioning every couple of days, you are wearing a silk bonnet to bed, so why is your hair still suffering? Chances are all you need is a hair serum. Hair serums are a styling tool. They can add shine, protect against humidity, and smooth your hair. Whether you are looking for a remedy for your dry ends, trying to reverse damage from color processing, or hoping to grow a few more inches, there’s a bottle for you out there.
5. Protein Treatments
Protein treatments are an essential part of maintaining the health of black hair. Protein treatments are designed to create a protective barrier for your hair. These treatments are especially helpful on chemically treated tresses, including color-treated or relaxed hair. They strengthen hair, help prevent breakage, repair damage, and restore elasticity by filling the holes in your hair, strands which are protein, with protein. All protein treatments are not created equal though. You want to ensure you’re choosing the right one to develop and maintain a healthy head of hair. You also want to be using it sparingly as it can easily dry out your hair.
Haircare is SO personal, and therefore this list is in no way comprehensive of all hair needs. What works for one person doesn’t necessarily work for another. It’s important to figure out which texture and type of hair you have, then experiment with the right ingredients and products perfect for YOUR hair care routine.
